Hallo

Hallo,

Although I've already started contributing some, I figured I might as well introduce anyway.

My name is Alec and I am a 15 year old Open Source developer and advocate. I program mostly in C, PHP, and Python. I've been coding in PHP for about 3 years now, I started learning PHP 5, just when the very first beta's of it were coming out in 2004/2005. After that I branched and tried 10's of different misc languages but settled on Python and C as alternatives to PHP for more desktop related applications.

I am also an avid linux user. I've been using linux for 2 years now and exclusively for 1 and my distribution of choice is Arch Linux.

I do not have any real websites at the moment although I am in the process of resurrecting a previous site and developing a new one. If your curious about anything else, just ask. Smile

RE: Hallo

Well im sort of stuck, because I use linux and PHP-GTK is still in development, nobody has packages for it. So I have to download an compile from source code the PHP-GTK library in order to get a GUI Toolkit to write graphical desktop applications and its been causing me some troubles lately. But I have an application currently in Alpha stage which aims to be an extremely light weight, yet extendable Programmers notepad so to speak written in PHP 5 and GTK. I have also written another command line utility (since command line is extremely powerful and useful in linux/unix) that automates the conversion of your music from mp3 to an open source/open standard audio codec. So flac or ogg. You can find the full description and capabilities on my blog:

http://maddog39.blogspot.com/2007/07/wel...ll-my.html

There is alot of other information about my other various projects on their so its worth a peak. Smile

gSourceEdit it the name of the text editor I mentioned and it's project page can be found at sourceforge here (screenshot included):
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gse
and source code for gse is availible from subversion:
http://gse.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/gse/trunk/

My other projects include:
MadBB - You could say "yet another bulletin board" but there's really more too it. I can explain in depth another time. (written in PHP)
Project Page: http://sourceforge.net/projects/madbb
Code Repository: http://madbb.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/madbb/trunk/

OpenParachute - 2D Game Development Framework (written in C, currently only runs on linux and are working on a windows port)
Project Page: http://code.google.com/p/libop
Code Repository: http://libop.googlecode.com/svn

All of my projects are in some sort of stable working order although may not be feature complete. But feel free to test out and try freely. Smile All these projects are 100% open source: gSE and OpenParachute are GPLv2 and MadBB is under the PHP license.

No its still in heavy development and its in Pre-alpha. Not every thing is finished. I do have a test board thats sort of old but some stuff works.

http://madbb.sourceforge.net/forums/index.php is a test board to try some stuff out.

If you want the latest and greatest, you need to checkout the SVN code repository tree and install it. I've been working on this for two years now. Why is it taking so long? Well, Im pretty much the only one working on it.

RE: Hallo

2 years??

That is too long. Normally, forums releases their upgraded versions on every months.

The forum looks so simple. I know that is not finished.

Now MyBB and PHPBB are the two only forums remaining which are free and popular. Still there were lots of forum available. It is not a good idea to develop a forum right now.

Otherwise you have to come with some exclusive things on your forum which makes unique.

RE: Hallo

Well its a long story, and the decision I made was to put a huge focus on security and I worked on it on and off alot, so for like a month I wouldnt work on it and then the next 2 months I would, that sort of thing. I rewrote it 3 times too and I am finally settling on the third try. It has well over 1,000 lines of code now and growing. So there is a lot there. I have built fairly robust frameworks in the backend to make development of the board itself much much faster and easier and some of that work is still going on as I revise and add new things to the framework. It also supports all 3 major databases that users use today, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite and phpBB is the ONLY other free BB that offers that. I did this because I am an avid PostgreSQL supporter and their really wasnt any choice for me as far as BBS's go. I also added SQLite because there are some hosts which dont offer a DB or offer very little DB's with basic plans, so anyone with PHP5 can have a database because SQLite is intergrated right in and doesnt require a server like MySQL and Postgres do. Well there is alot more to MadBB then meats the eye, as I've said before. But I guess its all leaking out gradually. Tongue

RE: Hallo

The database you working with the forum is great.

The release of the forum could be very interesting.

I just spend some time to develop http://searcs.us.to

But not this much, just about 5 - 7 days.

Also manage to make some other PHP - MySQL projects. But never did any desktop related projects.

RE: Hallo

Well they are really pretty easy. You can go to http://gtk.php.net to get the php-gtk binding and in the documentation section there are some tutorials and stuff that you can follow. http://www.php-gtk.eu also has alot of resources, tutorials, and examples on using PHP for desktop applications.

RE: Hallo

Iam not saying about the PHP Desktop applications. It is better to work with a .Net frame work or Visual C++ .

But I never gone through those fields even after learning all those languages.

RE: Hallo

Heh, well because of my linux background I'd have to HIGHLY disagree on .NET and VC++ but dont get me started on that lol. But yea, I see what your saying.
