Well, you can also make the animation separately using programs like Image Ready from Adobe and the integrate them on your site. It's actually even more effective this way because Flash requires quite a long time to load unless you have a good internet connection and it also requires a plugin that maybe not all your visitors have.

Yes..

.gif format is the best option for animated pictures. Flash files are also extensively used on the net for animations. But some some pages including animations by movie files. That takes some time for the browser to open the player and play the movie.

i studied flash,photoshop,swish and dreamweaver as a part of my web designing course

Anyway, of you say that you know Flash, you can make the animations with it and then export them as gifs. The only problem is that when Flash exports them it will automatically reduce the quality and sometimes they may look really ugly.
My piece of advice is to do an animation in Flash, export it as a gif and see if you like the quality.
